Bible "contradiction" - How much gold did Solomon get from Ophir?

8/4/2020

How much gold did Solomon get from Ophir?

Was it 420 talents (I Kings 9:26-28 KJV)?

““26And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Eziongeber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red sea, in the land of Edom. 27And Hiram sent in the navy his servants, shipmen that had knowledge of the sea, with the servants of Solomon. 28And they came to Ophir, and fetched from thence gold, four hundred and twenty talents, and brought it to king Solomon.”

Or was it 450 talents (II Chronicles 8:17-18 KJV)?
“17Then went Solomon to Eziongeber, and to Eloth, at the sea side in the land of Edom. 18And Huram sent him by the hands of his servants ships, and servants that had knowledge of the sea; and they went with the servants of Solomon to Ophir, and took thence four hundred and fifty talents of gold, and brought them to king Solomon”

I Kings 9:26-28 it says king Solomon made a navy of ships and they went to Ophir, and got four hundred and twenty talents of gold whilst II Chronicles 8:17-18 says that Huram sent him ships and got 450 tallents of gold.

The sceptic will say that there are two contradictions here. Was it Solomon’s navy or Huram navy that went to Ophir and did they get 420 or 450 talents of gold?

The answer is simple:
I Kings 10:22 (KJV)
“For the king had at sea a navy of Tharshish WITH the navy of Hiram: once in three years came the navy of Tharshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks”

I Chronicles 29:4 (KJV)
“Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses withal.“

They BOTH had navies and brought GOLD, SILVER, IVORY, APES and PEACOCKS etc. It also says there were 3000 talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, used in this house.

Apparently they went to Ophir MANY TIMES and got 400-500 talents of gold at a time.

This is not a contradiction.
